UNDER CONSTRUCTION

   Further W  is Lernavan  (till   1946 Ghachaghan). This latter has the ruined settlement of Kharabak 2 km W, and a 19^th c. church in the village.

   On the outskirts of Spitak  (till  1949 Hamamlu) you see various housing projects built by the international community to shelter the thousands made homeless by the December 1988 earthquake. On the hill is a monument to the estimated 4000 killed in Spitak. There is a  new  ornate church  just off the  road  and  a  semi- adequate  hotel   reached   by   turning

left after the new Cultural Center and before the descent to the railroad tracks. In the center of the city is new built, impressive S. Astvatsatsin church on early foundations.
